Summer is in full swing and we’re starting the month where we left the last, warmth & sunshine. It’s hot! ☀️
Today, on the 1st, we kick off with Lughnasadh a celebration of the harvest, cross quarter day (Gaelic/Pagan) and the beginning of autumn (let’s ignore that for a bit). Lammas (Christian) also falls on today and is the blessing of the first fruits of harvest festival.
Next up on the 5th August/Summer bank holiday for Ireland & Scotland.
11th is the closing ceremony of the summer Olympics in Paris. Followed by the Jewish day of mourning, Tisha B’av, the following day starting at sundown. 15th the assumption of Mary (Christian).
It’s Notting Hill carnival on the 25th & 26th. Also on the 26th are summer bank holiday for England, Wales & Northern Ireland as well as Krishna’s birthday (Hindu).
We’re closing the month with the opening ceremony for the summer paralympics on the 28th.
August’s full moon falls on the 19th and is known as the Grain moon, Lynx moon or Sturgeon moon 🌾🐱🐟
Abundance!
August is a month of abundance in the garden and I expect to – finally – pick the first ripe tomatoes, Padron peppers and aubergine from the garden. It feels like I’ve got it together now with the greenhouse watering and really, really need to save up for an irrigation system for in there to help me out in future years.
I think this may be my best luffa year yet, look at how many big ones there are already! 😱🥹 I’m also loving the volunteer tomato, it’s doing so well 😍
The dahlias are in full swing and I can’t wait for all of the varieties I’ve got to bloom (some not quite there yet). All the flowers are stunning and I love looking at them every single day! It’ll soon be time for my annual Rainbow Garden Flat lay and I can’t wait 🤩
Happy August, I hope it’s a good one for you
