Pineapple Guava

Feijoa sellowiana

Plant profile - Pineapple Guava

Image

Variety

Feijoa sellowiana

Type

Fruiting evergreen shrub tree

Growing Conditions

The plant is a warm-temperate, subtropical plant that also will grow in the tropics, but requires at least 50 hours of winter chilling to fruit, and is frost-tolerant. When grown from seed, feijoas are noted for slow growth during their first year or two, and young plants, though cold tolerant, can be sensitive to high wind. In the Northern Hemisphere, the species has been cultivated as far north as western Scotland!

Tasting notes and description

You can start with eating the flower petals. In the photo you see fleshy (thick) pinkish-white petals, those you can eat are have a sweet taste, some even describe as marshmallow. Do not however eat the rest of the flower as that will not taste good. Stick to the pink petals and you'll be fine. The fruits taste like a fruit-salad! I've not had the luck yet for fruit to set but I've read the fruits can taste any kind of mixture between pineapple, banana, kiwi, and guava, all at once.
